The House

Frog Street Farmhouse is a fine example of a traditional Somerset Longhouse which has been lovingly restored over the years to maintain the true character of the building.

Its heart dates back to medieval times (post 15th century).  Frog Street Farmhouse is thought to have been first constructed around 1436 and would have been mainly timber frame with wattle and daub filling except the west wall which was stone.  The wooden panelling in the main guest lounge is thought to date back to the mid-17th century when the house was first extended; following this the timber frame of the house was encased in stone.  The final changes came in the 19th century with the raising of the entire roof and new timbering with the thatch roof being replaced with slate.

Frog Street Farm was first home to Louise’s family in 1980.  At that time it was a working dairy farm set in just over 150 acres.  The dairy herd no longer exists but Louise’s parents now rent out some of the land and use the remainder as home to their thoroughbred broodmares and young stock.

David and Louise moved into the house in 2008 with the intention of renovating and opening originally as a Bed and Breakfast.  David, who was in the building trade, used his skills to bring the house back to the 21st century.  The renovation is remarkable, whilst retaining the charm and character of the house you will now find all the modern day conveniences.

The Owners

David and Louise Farrance (and of course Mabel the Jack Russell) have been running Frog Street as a successful business since 2009 and it really has gone from strength to strength, both David and Louise love what they do and look forward each year to welcoming back returning guests and meeting new ones.  Visitors to the farmhouse are from across the globe (thanks to the power of the internet) and they feel lucky to meet so many interesting people from all walks of life.

When operated as a bed and breakfast Frog Street Farmhouse was included in the Good Hotel Guide since 2011, which can only be achieved by guest recommendation it’s not something you can pay for.  They have been awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence since 2010 and in 2015 they were listed in the Daily Mail as one of the “10 best Bed and Breakfasts in Britain”.  Louise and David are thankful to all previous guests who have taken the time to write such kind words on the various reviews sites and helped them to achieve their consistent high ranking. Now a self catering business, this opened the door to a new challenge and new guests, the aim being to create a a place that you just have to come back too again and again.

Both David and Louise were born and raised in Somerset so they know the area well; so provide a comprehensive guide and advice on things to do and places to see.

Louise and David never sit back and take what they’ve achieved for granted; they are passionate about their business and keep evolving with the ever changing needs of their guests.
